With rusty paint cans breeding in my basement, spent batteries hiding in dark corners, dirty paint thinner stashed under stairs and burnt up compact fluorescents tempting disaster, it was time for some serious hazardous waste removal. Despairing over a trip to a far-flung depot, I came across the Toxic Taxi in the most recent Toronto collection calendar. If you have 10 - 50 litres/kilograms of household hazardous waste (HHW), the city will pick it up from your home for free! You can make your appointment by calling 311 or go online here. HHW includes: paints, solvents, glue, car fluids, pesticides, cleaning products, medication, CFLs, propane tanks and more.
