BRAIDED CANDLE

Come fair, come foul,
I'll twine the rope and sing.
At the world ash-tree
once I wove,
when from its trunk thrust,
big and strong,
a green forest of noble branches.
In its cool shadow
bubbled a spring,
whispering wisdom
as its waters welled;
there I sang of holy things.
An intrepid god
came to drink at the spring;
one of his eyes
he paid as forfeit for ever.
From the world ash-tree
Wotan then broke off a branch;
a spearshaft
the mighty one cut from the trunk.

-- the First Norn weaving the rope of destiny from Richard Wagner's Götterdämerung

Although this novelty candle (bought for 5$ at an estate sale) brings to mind operatic weaving, in truth it reminds me of really long intertwined hot dogs.
