The Gardiner Museum is currently exhibiting an impressive body of work by South African/Canadian artist Kathy Venter. Her life size terra cotta sculptures carry a power and intimacy in their rough realism. Venter uses a hand building technique to sculpt these pieces, making them 13% larger than life to accommodate for shrinkage in drying and firing. To watch her bring the clay to life (in an accompanying video) is to see a master at work. Using members from her community in Salt Spring Island BC as models, Venter is able to take a 21st century woman and transform her into an archetype.
