We visited a very dangerous store: Manufactum. Here you will find "the best" of everything, objects ranging from tools to stuffed animals, made right, by the people who have been making them for years. Packaged beautifully, these products are made ethically, of quality material and to an environmental standard: priced accordingly. Here is an excerpt from their mission statement:
How many of the products on offer today will ever become prized possessions?
This is why we have selected items of quality in the widest sense of the word:
- they are manufactured with great skill according to traditional methods and are thus reliable and practical;
- the materials are carefully chosen to suit the purpose, and are, therefore, attractive;
- they are made from traditional materials, i.e. metal, glass, wood etc., can be repaired and
- are environmentally friendly.
Having a fetish for beautiful, well constructed objects, it was difficult not to get carried away. Our restraint wavered at a perfect bottle of glue, but a catalogue meant that we could take the whole store home with us.
