We saw these flowers back in March and they brought to mind Shary Boyle and Christine Fellow's recent collaberation Everything Under the Moon at Harbourfront Centre. Along with Christine's lyrical music, Shary’s magical blend of projection, shadow-puppetry, and innovative staging told the story about a bee (from an apple tree) and bat trying to discover why their families were dying. These deaths were inspired by real issues facing the species; bat populations are declining from white-nose syndrome and bee populations have been affected by colony collapse disorder. An American study is to be released this June linking a nerve-agent pesticide (Imidacloprid) with the decline in the bee population. Seeing this tree bloom abnormally early repeated the ecological warnings of the play and gave me bittersweet feelings on such a sunny day.
