JANET CARDIFF AND GEORGE BURES MILLER : LOST IN THE MEMORY PALACE

Lost in the Memory Palace is an expansive exhibition by internationally renowned Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, now showing at the Art Gallery of Ontario.  The title is taken from an ancient memory trick; by remembering things in a physical space, you should be able mentally to walk through these spaces and discover forgotten memories.  Walking through the 7 rooms that comprise the exhibit is an exhilarating, terrifying and mind bending experience.  Using sound, video, robotics and installation, the artists create worlds that can become more immersive than any 3D movie - if you take the time to really experience them.  There is of course a surface fascination with the constructs of each room, such as a perfectly built Japanese office in Storm Room (2009), the derelict hoarders hovel in Dark Pool (1995) or the terrifying dentist chair turned torture seat in The Killing Machine (2007).  However, this tactile pleasure is only one player in a cast of stimuli.  Dialogue, music, lights and motion, in many cases triggered by the viewer, suspend reality and transport the onlooker to the alternate reality, dream, or mental state presented.

Give yourself a few hours and visit Lost in the Memory Palace, running until August 18th, 2013.
