ENCAUSTIC TILES

The design of encaustic tiles is achieved using inlaid clay of different colours instead of glazes or transfers.  This technique allows the pattern to remain intact as the tile wears down. Herbert Minton popularized encaustic tiles during the Gothic revival of the mid 18th to early 19th centuries. However, this technique dates back to the Middle Ages and was particularly in favour between the 13th and 16th centuries in English and European churches.  Last year I attempted my own encaustic tiles with promising results.  I look forward to further experimentation, looking to match the quality of the pictured Victorian example at the end of this post.  Something about the graphic patterns, unglazed texture and rich clay colours make these tiles compelling and delicious.  I'm not surprised they're experiencing a recent revival.
