Josiah Wedgewood developed Black basalt, an unglazed coloured stoneware, in 1768. Made from a reddish brown clay combined with manganese, vessels and decorative objects in black basalt are stately and timeless. Judging from the mark, this tea cup was made between 1908 and 1969; Wedgewood himself said black is sterling and will last forever and it seems that Yves Saint Laurent agrees.
