Lisa DiQuinzio’s month long residency at the VSVSVS warehouse will culminate this Saturday with her exhibition You still shoot on film, right? Integral to both her time at the studio and the paintings, video and
textile work she produced while there, are two life-sized clown dolls. You can watch this video as an introduction.
The doll in the video has come to be known as Larry. He’s been joining DiQuinzio in her daily
life, while the second, almost identical doll remains at the studio. DiQuinzio pits these characters against
one another and through this antagonism is viewing the same things in different
ways; a duality that carries through the body of work created under the gaze of
these silent figures. While Larry is out
in the world, a deflector, a conversation starter, a blank screen for the
viewer to project on, the other doll is a formalized version of him: the
critic, the white gallery walls, the institution. Yet they are both
clowns. DiQuinzio is toying with the
nature of her job as an artist and has provided us with her own trinity to
decode.
You'll find VSVSVS at 25 Polson by Cherry Beach. Be there between 7 and 10pm.
