This is my favourite sculpture from the Bode Museum in Berlin. The colours, the beautifully carved cloth, the majesty of the saint, and the kindness of the people leave this piece heavy on my mind. I have seen this lady in a few churches but have never discovered her name no matter how many Catholics I ask. I'm left thinking that she is a rendition of the Virgin Mary but would love to be corrected.
The Bode Museum is a treasure chest of sculpture, Byzantine artwork and Old Master painting. First opened in 1904, it was the museum director Wilhelm von Bode who chose to show artwork within a historic setting, striving for authenticity. This idea for contextualizing artwork was influential the world over. The museum was severely damaged during the war and was not fully reopened until 2006.
