A BOX FOR TIME TRAVEL

When I first saw this box at the St. Lawrence market, I thought it was a homemade art deco oddity because of the colour combination and wavy lines.  On closer inspection however, the American penny handles tell the real story - 1962 - I wonder what it used to store..?
