Henry Pellatt, innovative businessman, philanthropist and dreamer, built Casa Loma in 1911. Bad luck and poor judgement lost him this fantasy property by 1924. After a failed attempt at transforming the grand home into a hotel, the City of Toronto took it over as a tourist attraction in 1937. The original furnishings were auctioned off when Pellatt went bankrupt, and years of neglect and strange 1970s renovations have left the interior looking less than stunning. The stables, however, retain a glint of the golden days and bear the Pellatt family motto: Devant Si Je Puis, or, Foremost If I Can.
