The sight of this derelict futon, left on a neighbour's balcony to moulder, was the dubious start to an afternoon shopping expedition in search of just such an item. Aiding a friend, we headed to the Annex (which turns out to be the futon district) and tried some out.
The western futon is an adaptation of a Japanese bed intended to be stored during the day to repurpose a room. Futons were hot in the 80's and 90's, the convertible couch and coloured covers seemed ubiquitous in college homes and rec rooms. In recent years we've seen more roadside than in-house, however, after seeing the shops full of potential futon owners we asked our helpful sales clerk if the futon was "back". He seemed to think so.
