We visited Sojourner Truth Parsons back in May, finding shapes and characters that have transpired into Seven Songs, opening last week at Katharine Mulherin Art Projects. This show is a visceral experience. The gestures and attitudes of the characters peopling her world are animated and raw. They are moving to a music you can almost hear, sweating and smiling in savagery and sweetness. To find such honest, and feeling in work is a rare gift, teaching and telling of social wrongs and subtle joys. Parsons' use of materials, her manipulation through dyeing, crinkling, layering over and leaving out, takes you back in time and forward to an unthinkable future.
so many feelings. i love this show.
