The street level entrance to Sari Lightman's 3rd storey apartment, where she lives with her girlfriend Sami Gary, is quietly watched by a posse of Portugese men. We made our way through these sentinels, up a tiled staircase, through a dark hallway and found ourselves in a skylit urban garden, restful and comfortable with rocking chair at the ready.
Sari, along with her twin Romy, are the driving force behind the band Tasseomancy. Transplanted to Halifax from Toronto for 7 years, the mystical and ethereal sounds of Tasseomancy had their origin by the Atlantic ocean. The music is imbued with the sadness and fluidity of this water. It was on an East Coast beach that they met Katie Stelmanis from Austra, an outfit they now tour with as support singers and dancers. The electronic sound of Austra has inspired an uplifting energy to Tasseomancy's latest work.
Sari was heading out to mix the new Tasseomancy album, scheduled to come out this spring, but before leaving she introduced us to the music of Moon Dog. Her favourite song beat out the patterns and textures of her home and lent some insight into her current creative sparks.
I'm in love with this
