Kai began an apprenticeship at 14 to become a master saddle maker in his native Germany. When asked "Why leather?" it seems that wood didn’t suit and a chance opening landed him the position. From a casual beginning, leather has become a passion. Entering his studio, piled high with beautiful and fragrant skins, we could see why. When first training, Kai tried to bend the leather to his will, but has since learned, in his quarter century of experience, that the leather is master and will teach you how it would like to be manipulated. He is sensitive to this natural material and creates innovative furniture, wall treatments, lighting solutions and home accessories through his company Kai Leather.
I’m somewhat jealous of the early start he had in his trade. I treasure the years spent over biology and algebra but perhaps could have honed my skills better if taught with a more malleable brain. Then again, perhaps it’s all about how you play your hand when the dealing's done.
