BETHUNE LEAMEN : LAWREN HARRIS

While Naomi's been in Denmark I've been crashing her ceramic studio and so saw Katie Bethune-Leamen at work on her blobs.  These ceramic sculptures, Blobs for Lawren Harris' Glaciers, Snow, Ice & Unknown Things were created to interact with his paintings at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Harris' snowy peaks, and mystical sunbeams are always nice to visit, but Bethune-Leamen's blobs offer a new window with which to frame these classics.  She has captured the colours, textures and feelings of his paintings and forces the viewer to delve deeper into the landscapes.  The epic mountains and icebergs that Harris is portraying are made pedestrian by the small forms sitting below them, and yet the solidity of the clay and the luscious glazes lend the paintings a deeper three dimensional quality.
